Imagine bragging about money in societies that are decaying? What is your money going to buy you apart from a house to get away from everyone? People think you can extract all the money from society then go around and spend it, but if you haven't figured it out yet, there won't be anywhere or anything to spend it since everything will turn to shit. Go ahead and continue going to the handful of restaurants that cater to the wealthy in cities that have gone to shit, then quickly leave the restaurant because you can't linger around making yourself a target to the poor, get in your cars as quickly as you can and go to the few bars where it's safe enough for you to hang out. You won't have anything useful to spend your money on, for example you won't be able to buy a cure for cancer because no one wants to work in basic research because the incentives are terrible. but hey you can buy another shiny car and another wooden box on another piece of land.
It would have been better to be lower upper class (no mortgage, large house, no debt) in a society that had an upward trajectory, than a giga wealthy person in a society that's decaying. The former society can produce useful ideas and inventions, the latter can't.
