I worked at a mental hospital and repeatedly saw catch & release with these absolute lunatics. Schizos, bipolar, anxiety where they need to be dragged to eat their lunch, depression where we have to also force them to their feet because we are not getting liability for starvation accusations. You are right, we do need to focus on mental health, but that's where asylums come in. Jails are not fit for them and endanger other inmates.

Schizophrenia is one of the most treatable mental disorders that exist. Medication is extremely effective at managing it. Unbelievably effective. The downside is that if you're a pot smoker, you no longer get high because that is suppressed, or rather you actually get sick instead. The meds aren't even necessary to take daily, you can get a shot now that lasts an entire month. You just need to make sure not to delay your dose or you're back to la la land.

Given that weed is one of the easiest ways to trigger latent schizophrenia into the full blown disorder, it's not surprising that getting high while on those meds is an issue.

If you have any family history with schizophrenia, you shouldn't smoke weed or vape THC. You can get away with doing that if you stick to really mild strains, but as soon as you smoke something strong, you can easily end up talking to invisible friends.

I still have my certifications, I left on good terms but I am not currently working with mental patients due to burn out and nightmares I got towards the end. Night shifts, full day shifts, overtime it just felt like I was a patient in the same institution but with a uniform and laminate. There are some moments of clarity you get from dealing with a schizophrenic, it almost makes sense, different dimensions, and them telling me the demons they see. I do not like to hear that shit, I am superstitious regardless of them being mental loons so I sedate or step away from them. Those are the ones I tried to help, people talk about rehabilitation but a majority are far too gone. The homeless schizo 30, 40, 50, 60 year old men need to be locked up for life, regular programs didn't work for them, drugs and alcohol worsened the brain damage and jails are cruel to them. They need doctors and nurses. The alternative is to let them cause chaos, hurt someone and die slowly and suffer in pain. Prolong their life with medications, they won't even know whats going on. That is the most humane solution.
