We live in the age of firepower. This is nothing new - fundamentally, wars are fought the same way as they were by 1918 at the latest, because the "facts of life" haven't fundamentally changed. Then as now, the main consideration in land warfare is the terrible destructive power of modern weapons - even ordinary rifles, machine guns and quick-firing artillery, even if these are all old hat (though still widely used and very useful) are extremely deadly. Even a handful of defenders armed with things like machine guns can cut down an incautious or inept attacker. Viewed in this light, drones are just the latest in a long succession of new weapons.

Regardless, it's still possible to successfully attack and defend against an opponent armed with such weapons. A lot of it comes down to the same old techniques of passive defense: dispersion, maximum use of cover and concealment, etc. In general, you want to deny your enemy, whether you're attacking or defending, to get shots off - you do this by not being seen, and by doing your best to suppress or find and kill him.

As an aside, all of this - because you have to proceed systematically - tends to slow things down; the average speed of an attacking force advancing against concerted opposition hasn't changed since Napoleonic times. (It's a a literal, physical speed - there's historical data from dozens and dozens of wars.) It's a little slower than walking pace, despite the advent and wide adoption of all kinds of motor vehicles and so on. With me so far?

Can even the best-equipped and best-trained infantry squad do anything at all to defend themselves against artillery attack? Of course not - and this isn't a new state of affairs. I should add that, long before the first observation drones, artillery fire could be very accurate and deadly. Regardless, it was still possible to use infantry, whether on the offense or on the defense.

Artillery in the past required a scout team finding the enemy and calling it in. Now you dont need to risk those men. That alone is drastic.

Of course infantry are needed and effective. But if a counter to drones is not found then theres going to be a major issue

That isn't a new state of affairs. You must also consider that, in general, both sides will have drones - or artillery, or machine guns, or whatever...

>>511393345
Capeshit.

-

Leaving that aside, I think the thing to do is to consider what the "tactical system" of the future will look like - and it must be considered as a system. (Incidentally, the term "combined arms" is a misnomer the way it's often used.) What you need is to consider the way an/the army operates as a unified, integrated system - its doctrine and tactics and so on, and also its equipment. All this is for the sake of solving a certain fundamental problem: how to successfully attack and defend against an opponent equipped with things like observation quadcopters, FPV kamikaze drones, etc.?

Well, in the first place, and as mentioned, you make maximum use of cover, concealment and dispersion. These technologies make it very hazardous to concentrate troops - it's because there's only so much cover available in a given area, and you saturate it pretty quickly. On the other hand, these technologies also mean that you need to have fewer troops on the ground - though you still need some - than before. Therefore, even though these weapons make it more hazardous than before on the receiving end, they also mean that you have to put fewer men in harm's way than before. This means that your troops will be deployed in greater depth and probably over relatively longer frontages than before - which is a continuation of existing trends.

I haven't really taken the time to think about organization, so I'm rambling - this'll be rather disjoined. Regardless, even though I don't think I've properly introduced the subject, let's turn to what the weapons of the future might look like.

In the first place, I think artillery has a very bright, and very long, future ahead of it. With that said, the basic weapon of the artillery might be rockets/missiles (that is, something rocket-powered and which flies on a ballistic trajectory, like an artillery rocket) rather than guns and shell. Why?

It's a matter of greater range; the longer-ranged your guns or whatever, the further away from the front line they can operate, which is a great advantage - distance is excellent protection from FPV quadcopters and Lancet-like things, or whatever their future successors will be, as well as from observation drones and the like.

The actual rockets in question (as an aside, not all missiles are rockets - some have jet propulsion; in addition, if it's solid, it's a motor, whereas if it burns liquid propellants, it's an engine) will be rather like existing artillery rockets. They'll be large enough to achieve substantially greater ranges than tube artillery, and they'll be mass-produced in huge quantities - if you do that, you can make them very cheap. (Manufactured goods are expensive because they're made in small quantities, and not the other way round.) I believe that it's possible, even with unguided rockets, to achieve good accuracy even at very long range, but it'll take some work. It won't be that expensive to provide them with guidance.

It's possible these rockets might be good dual-purpose weapons - perhaps with the addition of a relatively cheap guidance kit, something like how a glide kit can be attached to a dumb bomb, they can be made into cheap heavy SAM interceptors. This has historical precedent; look at how flak was an adaptation of tube artillery, and could be used against ground targets.

Don't be mean. I'm clearly complaining in jest. My point is that we've seen a lot of evolution, but no revolution in technology.
Drones are a revolution in ISR and targeted removal of materiel/personnel. But that's not a technical revolution by any means. That's what I'm complaining about.

Shells will keep being a thing for a while because you can saturate a large area and deliver a lot of explosive power for low cost (unless you're a natofag making shell for 5000 $ apiece, but even then they'll be cheaper than your drones and rockets cause everything will be scaled accordingly)

You can't plan technological/scientific breakthroughs/paradigm shifts; they happen/arrive of their own volition. There may well be no scientific/technological paradigm shifts applicable to land warfare/or warfare in general in the offing. And actually, even things like portable energy shields or railguns or what have you wouldn't change the rules of the game - after all, they're like what already exists, just more so in some respects.

>>511394255
Rockets can be made very cheap, perhaps more cheaply than shells; you don't need to make heavy forgings. You also save on the cost of the tubes - that is, the barrels, although to be fair there's ways to make those rather cheaply, too, and ways to reduce the cost of shell as well. Either way, you have to be able to make HE and propellant (whether that's to fill charge bags or motors) cheaply.

Look into what the Germans tried to bring down the cost of artillery ammunition/gun tubes during WWII. Ian Hogg (perhaps you remember him from 90s-era History Channel documenteries, where he was a frequent interviewee - he was a British expert on ordnance) wrote a book on the German artillery of WWII, where he describes both German efforts to develop artillery shells made from concrete, to make the driving bands for shells from sintered iron rather than copper alloys, to make cartridge cases for artillery ammunition (in those days, the Germans preferred case guns with sliding breechblocks) from steel rather than the same copper alloys, and to make barrels for flak guns from several welded segments rather than from big forgings.

OK, lemme stop the QQ and put on a serious hat for a moment.

We've seen the success that sea drones are capable of even though their use has been much more limited than air or even land drones. My (open) question is when we'll see naval vessels outfitted with launchers for sea drones?

I'm guessing never since all ship-on-ship combat will happen with missiles at BVR distances?

So then what are sea drones good for? Lying in ambush for paroling vessels in some kind of hidden autonomous drone station? A weapon for non-state actors?

>sea drones
I've given this matter much less thought.

>We've seen the success that sea drones are capable of even though their use has been much more limited than air or even land drones.
I'm not sure how successful the hohols actually been in this respect. The Kerch Bridge is still standing, the Black Sea Fleet is still very much in business (they're still kalibrating the land of 404 on a regular basis, after all), etc.

>My (open) question is when we'll see naval vessels outfitted with launchers for sea drones?
>So then what are sea drones good for? Lying in ambush for paroling vessels in some kind of hidden autonomous drone station?
These questions are related. Bear in mind that sea drones are based on fairly general purpose technologies and so on.

I think to some extent they might be used offensively as a replacement for naval commandos. Other types of drones, meanwhile, sort of fall into the same category as mines - which have damaged/sunk more warships than any other kind of naval weapon in the postwar era. (They did a lot in the world wars, too.)

>>511394780
You'd have to look at the matter in detail. Those shells (and don't forget you need *charges,* too) won't be that much cheaper than rockets, and they won't be able to reach as far - plus, you've got to consider that the cost per *shot* includes depreciation on the gun and so on, and you can't use the same basic projectile for both offensive (against ground targets) and defensive (against air targets with the addition of a cheap "tail kit") purposes.

Absolutely not, and the historical record bears this out - the M14 turned out to be a real dog of a rifle; as I understand it, the fact that e.g. the Springfield Armory doesn't exist any more is partly a result of the M14 debacle.

I won't pretend to pull stats out of my ass. I recall reading interviews with sailors of the modern Russian patrol ship that was sunk by a drone. Their complaint was how difficult the drone was to detect in the first place with their radar and then to attempt at destroy because all they had were machine guns mounted on the deck perimeter of their ship. All this means is that naval anti-drone defenses are going to need to evolve too.

>replacement for naval commandos
This is a good idea. Instead of flashy missiles send in sea drones (maybe even a submarine variant?) followed immediately by human commandos. Makes sense why it was the Bongs who appear to have invested so much into developing such drones.

Did you ever look into why VLS took over the more traditional missile launchers on ships? I am guessing because VLS can accomodate more powerful/longer range missiles despite it being impossible (for now) to reload VLS while underway?

As an aside, I don't think any of the good service rifles of the 20th century (we'll lump the late 19th-century stuff in - basically, everything designed to chamber ammo that's familiar to us) were designed by a committee.

Let's consider the old stuff first: the bolt-action rifle par excellence, the Mauser, was the work of a pair of brothers. The M1 rifle was John Garand's brainchild; as for the M1 carbine, I suggest you look into the story of "Carbine" Williams; it's a very interesting one - he developed it while in prison for some petty violent crime. They made a movie about it. Mikhail Kalashnikov designed the AK, Eugene Stoner the AR, and Dieudonne Saive (he was John Browning's protege, since Browning ended up at FN - he even taught himself French, beginning with all the words for the various parts of guns, by a laborious but effective process) and so on, and so forth.

>>511395386
>Did you ever look into why VLS took over the more traditional missile launchers on ships?
More firepower. You can get more missiles off in a shorter period of time because a VLS is a hell of a lot faster than the old rail-based systems - there's much less to do. Also, there's no need to traverse and elevate a launcher - the missile takes care of that all on its own. The rate of fire of guided missile warships armed with old-style rail launchers is much lower, because you've got to go through this elaborate mechanical rigamarole for every shot:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wbP3Piglt3U
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z61GgmFj_X4
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pjLdsTalnbw

I can't find the exact film I was looking for, but "mechanical rigamarole" is no exaggeration; this gigantic Rube Goldberg machine has to take the missile from the magazine on to the rail.

I didn't even think of that. I figured that once the missile is off the rail it'll take care of corrections by itself like a VLS-launched one.

To get back to the original question - the answer to the drone problem is, in the first place, to use your own firepower and observation drones and so on to clear away as many threats as you can (in general, I'm thinking of what you do on the offense) so that your own front-line forces, whether they're on foot or mounted, have a minimum of stuff flying their way. They must also, as stated, disperse, take maximum advantage of cover, etc.

Besides this, you mass-produce air defense systems and radars - not man-portable stuff - to provide cover. Another possibility is to redesign main battle tanks around dual-purpose armament - low-cost guided missile/rocket systems that are also highly effective against aerial targets - but that's another story. This way, you have a good idea of what's in the air, so you can provide early warning of attack, and you have some ability to shoot down incoming threats. That's something you do in addition to other measures, though - you have to make sure your enemy gets as few opportunities to get good shots off as possible.

I also have recollection that chinks built a mid-size vessel (forgot if Destroyer or Cruiser) with a shitload of VLS. Even if the missiles themselves aren't the best the defender is still going to be at a huge disadvantage as common doctrine dictates launching two interceptors per one incoming.
>>511395790
Watched the second clip. That's cool tech, but painfully slow.

Any opinion on the role of aircraft carriers will play in American doctrine over the next 20-30 years? Having a platform to launch 5th gen jets anywhere in the world is cool, but their operational area will be severely limited by hypersonic anit-ship missiles and even IRBMs.

This is very incorrect.
Russia can build giant city block size factories deep in its interior. The best that Ukraine can do are small artisinal drone printing shops dispersed amongst apartment buildings because anything the size of a warehouse will eventually be identified and Kalibrated.

I think the USN will keep them round, barring some catastrophe, just out of sheer inertia.
>Having a platform to launch 5th gen jets anywhere in the world is cool, but their operational area will be severely limited by hypersonic anit-ship missiles and even IRBMs.
The real question is what naval airpower can actually accomplish; it seems as though even against a technically backwards adversary with no meaningful air defense, there might not be all that much naval airpower can do on its own to affect the course of events on the ground; I read recently (on Twatter) that apparently the USN is flying lots of sorties in Somalia against al-Shabaab or some other nigger headchopper outfit, but they're still advancing regardless and may well capture Mogadishu, despite the fact that they have no meaningful ability to impede USN sorties.

Here's the film I was thinking of:

The sequence we're interested in starts at the five-minute mark.

Carriers have been relegated to police and humanitarian duties, as they have no place in the era of sats and networked hypersonic missiles. The problem is that the enemy does not need to see the carrier exactly, only their general direction. The missile salvo will search and assign targets on their own, while reporting back detailed information that can be used to aim the second salvo if it is required.
This also works on airplanes when you are firing AA missiles on stealt jets btw but they are obviously more mobile.

It's actually still pretty hard to find targets at sea, at least if they're way out in the open ocean - I sperged out at one of the hues over this. You see, satellites can only detect things they've got line-of-sight to - they can't detect anything at all at a given location if they're under the horizon, and for reasons of orbital mechanics, you need a *lot* of satellites to get continuous coverage of an area.

>what naval airpower can actually accomplish
Yeah, that's true. I remember giving another anon a hard time ITT because he didn't understand that airpower is only as strong as the targets your ISR or spies can provide it.
If doctrine changes to reduce occurrences of force concentration then at best you are hitting some bunkers/trenches/ammo dumps (assuming you can get close enough). Which isn't nothing, but it then becomes a question of economics and wartime production both for the guided bombs and the airframes.

Sounds fucking lit, bro
Start by getting rid of all but one crewman; there'll still be about as many men in e.g. a tank platoon/company, but they'll be assigned to "pit crews." Why? Well, you reduce interior volume, which lets you - for reasons of geometry - make use of your weight more efficiently; you can have less surface area and so on, so you can have thicker armor for a given weight.

You automate things so that this one crewman - I suppose he'll be like a mecha pilot - can control everything easily. Since there's no need to coordinate the actions of several men, he might well be able to make more effective use of his vehicle than otherwise.

For armament, the tank will have both some kind of autocannon - perhaps up to 57mm caliber - and a guided missile system; I envision several launch rails mounted on the turret and fed from a magazine in the hull. You could keep it quite simple, actually - just traverse the turret to point dead ahead and elevate the launchers to vertical to line them up with little hatches to the magazines. These might be hypervelocity missiles, similar to some existing (prototyped but never fielded) designs. You'd have several types - for use against armored ground targets, you might have unguided KE ones. These would have a longer minimum range than tank guns, but it wouldn't be so bad; they'd be able to kill whatever they hit at quite substantial ranges. For use against other types of targets, you might have both HEAT and fragmentation rockets. For fire control, you'd have a small phased-array radar. And of course, you'd also have lots of ERA, cage armor, and active protection. These things would operate in concert with acquisition radar vehicles for early warning. They'd be able to effectively defend themselves from drones and many types of missiles, but you'd have to take the other measures I've described so they wouldn't just be overwhelmed.

The whole point of modern missiles is that you do not need to track them perfectly. You know when they leave port, you occasionally spot them as sats move above because you know where to look because there is a department in naval intelligence in charge of keeping track of where the carrier is.

It isn't even that. The kind of satellites you'd use would be in low Earth orbits; that means an orbital period of 90 to 100 minutes. They'd be over the horizon at any given location for 10 minutes or so at most, and that's if you're right under the ground track.

Their orbits will be at some inclination to the equator; even if it's at a fairly low inclination and you're only interested in coverage at low latitudes (this is applicable to the Pacific), the Earth is rotating sideways while the orbit itself remains fixed in inertial space. As a result, to get continuous coverage, you need a lot of satellites in multiple planes. This is why any communications service which uses satelites in low Earth orbit must include a lot of spacecraft in many different orbital planes. Look into Iridium.

Think of a satellite in orbit around the Earth as acting like the rotor of a gyroscope; it's effectively on perfect gimbals. If you want to look into the orbital mechanics, you need concern yourself only with circular orbits; you need three orbital elements - that is, the circular orbital altitude (or radius), the inclination, and the right ascension of ascending node (RAAN).

I think you meant a different post. There's a lot of different techniques, and there's many different kinds of missiles.

Let's consider, for starters, the sort of anti-ship missiles we're familiar with. These are effectively miniature airplanes; they have wings and they generate aerodynamic lift, and they fly at relatively low altitudes; they usually have jet propulsion. In the terminal phase of an attack, they might fly at speeds comparable to a jet airliner - that is, fairly high subsonic speeds; alternatively, they might make a supersonic dash to the target. Regardless, such missiles are almost invariably active radar-homing; they carry a radar, which can acquire and track targets on the sea surface the same way radars acquire and track any other target. After that, it's just a matter of steering into said target. There's lots of possibilities there - you might fly in at wave-top height all the way, or you might pull up and then dive on the target, for example. What you do at higher speeds is another story...

Any specific reason for this caliber? I looked it up and 57mm are either single shot AT guns, one AA gun, or a number of naval guns.
For comparison BMPT Terminator uses twin 30mm cannons.

One's a question of the wavelength of radiation your sensor is similar to - you mean infrared. There's near and far infrared and so on...
>matching images
You can "image" things in many different ways. You don't even have to use radiation - you can use sound, although that's not applicable here. "Matching images" - I think you mean using computer vision - is very broadly applicable; it's a separate matter from the sensors themselves.

>>511397967
There's plenty of single-seat fighters. I'm just thinking (I've never played e.g. World of Tanks, but I have played GHPC) of my experience playing tank games - it's a lot easier to do hull-down tactics well if you can simultaneously aim and steer. Bear in mind that you might not have to do that much aiming; it could be automated pretty easily - just designate a target and let the fire control system take care of the rest.

>Maybe this is scope creep, but it would be nice if this machine could use its missiles to hit ground targets and not just provide an air defense "bubble" only.
You'll find I mention this in the post you quote.

That was a wrong reply, but I'm happy for your answer.
Radar is a good point, especially with how easy it should be to identify targets against the backdrop of the ocean.
What I'm thinking of are two cases:
- If I fire one missile against a group of ships, how can I tell the missile to target the most valuable one? Seems to me it would just target whatever it "sees" first.
- If I fire a salvo of missiles against a group of ships then how do I avoid multiple missiles targeting the same ship? I doubt there's any communication BETWEEN the missiles... even the modern variants... where onboard computers would coordinate the most effective attack against a group.

If you're talking about something like a modern anti-ship missile - I'll talk about how anti-ship ballistic missiles or something more exotic might do it some other night - you have to have a good idea of where to aim to begin with. These missiles have only so much endurance, and warships are pretty fast; they can displace if they have early warning, and just a few kilometers can make a big difference.

What anti-ship missiles do in general is they follow a pre-programmed course - maybe they fly from waypoint to waypoint under inertial guidance, which has been easy to arrange for decades - until they arrive in the vicinity of the target. At that point, they switch their radars on; they're said to "go active," I think, and there's some brevity code for it. Air-to-air missiles are said to go "mad dog," but I think the term for anti-ship missiles is different.

Anyway, the missile will fly along with its radar active for a certain distance; it might attack the first good radar return it gets, but more sophisticated behaviors are possible; you see, a target like a ship creates a fairly complex radar return, because it's a complex object; it's possible (and I think it's been possible for many years) to program the missile to recognize a particular target, or at least to attack a target of a certain size. Of course, there's also techniques to blind or deceive radars; ECM is its own subject.

If nothing's found after flying a certain distance, the missile can fly back and forth until it finds something suitable or its fuel runs out.

I was thinking of tech used in Javelins, but turns out I was misremembering. Javelins do not match photos of a tank but they match/track to the heat signature of a tank. So we are back to IR.

I think I see your point when it comes to our "assault MLRS". I keep thinking of "who will provide target coordinates/location to guided missiles?" but if this is done by laser designation carried by infantry or drones that are flown by operators as part of assault then launching a missile becomes as easy as pressing a button to get signal data and then another button to select correct missile.

personally I would still want a "buddy" in the machine with me unless reducing things to a single human would somehow drastically reduce size/weight of the machine or increase occupant survivability.

Man, this "asault is a VERY cool idea. TOS-1 is already very cool, but imagine that with double the missiles (because of reduced size) or just slap the new evolution of Pantsir on top of this armored chasis.... Subarashi!

The vehicles I'm describing would be *tanks,* and so they'd be perfectly capable of getting close enough to danger for direct fire. Of course, nothing would prevent them from conducting indirect fire as well, esp. with the help of observation drones. In that case, you wouldn't necessarily need a laser designator - you need something with the capability to home in on reflected laser light anyway - as you could just "shoot at/from the map" with good results.

I appreciate that you enjoy giving thought-out answers to dumb questions :)
You make a good point that it's never a good idea to turn on radar right away because this can be easily used to quickly determine that a missile is in the air. I didn't think of a missile being able to classify radar returns by size/complexity, but that's a feature I can see would be easy to implement in the guidance module even decades ago.

Speaking of decoys, I am sure you know of the ALE-55 system for F-35s. I was really surprised to find out that something like that was enough to fool anti air missiles, but that's just my ignorance. The technology is cool!

Towed decoys are nothing new; they were widely used in 1999 over Serbia, for example. A lot of American aircraft (I think it was only the USAF that operated over Serbia) were saved from destruction by SAM hits only by their towed decoys, actually.

That's a big story in and of itself, because it means that the Serbian PVO was able to (as is well known) keep operating and to get many, many shots off at USAF aircraft - I think they hit dozens of decoys.

TOS-1 is built on a T-72 or T-90 chassis. I understand you're referring to having an "intermediary size" cannon though (bigger than Bradley 25mm/BMPT 30mm but smaller than an MBT).
Personally I wouldn't mind just having 48 rail missiles of various types (ground-to-air, ground-to-ground fragmentation, etc) and a remote controlled DShK (because why would you ever say "no" to one of those).

I think BMPTs are closest real thing we have to what you imagine.. they just have smaller (dual) guns and fewer missiles.
Very cool vehicle.

>Not arguing, but how would missiles identify enemy ships? Heat or matching images?
Radar and radio. Here is the old system that I am familiar with: one missile is declared leader and flies high. It searches with its onboard radar and directs the other missiles, telling them where to go and assigning targets that it picks out from the radar signatures it spots. Should tge leader missile be destroyed, another is assigned as leader and does the same job. They are all the same and because this was half a century ago they have computers the size of a large fridge.
Thus was all hardwired, new missikes with new computers have way less limitations in that regard.

I'm not that attached to any particular caliber for the gun armament, but you do need some kind of autocannon - this kind of main armament does come with some disadvantages, and one of them is probably a longer minimum range/larger dead zone than tank guns.

Yes, or the 2K22 Tunguska. The main difference is that you have to have some way to reload the launch rails from a large magazine in the hull, but there's some precedent for that as well:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZTsf2tc6RM
One possibility is just to mount *robot arms* to reload the launch rails.

I love the idea of BMPTs, an infantry support vehicle that brings missiles, autocannons, grenade launchers and mortars to bear to support assaults is great news for any infantry squad. Unfortunately drone warfare has made it a little obsolete, especially since chink carts are much more of a gamechanger since they give the speed needed to outpace FPVs and anti infantry drones. Still, airburst 23-4 guns should be somewhat useful against drones and as fire support.

Ukrainians and Russians may be brothers but their approaches to war and politics couldn't be more different. In Russia you see Putin giving his generals great freedom to retreat from disadvantageous positions even if it comes at great political cost - Kherson, Kharkov outskirts - and in Ukraine you have the rank amateur Zelensky ordering his army that was *withdrawing* from Bakhmut to reverse and hold their ground until the last man, all because Prigozhin goaded him on video and he couldn't resist.
This crippled their 2023 offensive and the idiots even went so far as to divide their forces between Zapo and retaking Bakhmut. And then there was the Krynki idiocy. And the "until the last man" holds of Marinka, Avdeevka, Ugledar etc etc.

No ground vehicle - barring rocket sleds or world-record rocket cars and the like - can outrun a drone.

What chink trucks actually - and for that matter, motorcycles - actually let you do (besides carrying much heavier burdens than can be borne on the shoulders of man) is to let you more rapidly deploy and concentrate forces; you can keep everyone dispersed and then, using the speed of these vehicles, rapidly concentrate your forces to achieve local numerical superiority.

I thought the video you linked was a joke but then I realized that yeah, it's supposed to drop the spent tube missile container after firing...
My reload system is much simpler. If you run out of max 48 missiles then gunner gets out, runs to back of vehicle, retrieves new missiles from blowout container (they are small so each one is easily lifted by a man) and starts slamming them onto rails.
EZPZ. No need for complex reloading mechanism that might fail.

Here's another video - I only offer it as an example, but there's some images of mechanized reloading from hull storage at about the three-minute mark:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g-4nNOmGdw0
You might reload the *magazine* from, say, a resupply vehicle manually, but for a variety of reasons I think you don't want too many tubes/launch rails on the turret, esp. since the rockets/missiles in question shall be fairly large individually - they have to be, since I have something with a lot of impulse and a fairly big payload in mind.

There is always a game of "offense/defense" when it comes to armor. Remember emergency of first RPGs and then MANPADs? And how fucked armor was?
But engineers did not give up and they innovated and gave us composite armor and ERA. Later they tried to give "Active Defense Systems", but these are not rolled out yet. Same will happen for drones. Now drones have advantage unless you are rolling fat like Tsar Mangal.
So engineers back at work thinking of good defense tools. This will always be the cycle. That's my point. I am not worried about tanks leaving the battlefield any time this century. They are much too powerful and valuable when used well.

One of the reasons I despise the current government is that its trying to make Hinduism into something that looks like an Abrahamic faith. It's not even a religion that has any concept of people converting to Hinduism. It just is. You declare you are a Hindu and no one should be able to say no. And no Hindu cares or should care if other Hindus worship at churches or mosques and millions of Hindus do. That's why I don't think it's a religion in the Abrahamic sense. It just is.
Picrel, if you know what to look for, you can clearly see that the lady in the front in the red and black sweater is a North Indian Hindu praying in a church.

Yeah, the Kupyansk is more or less done, Russia is just taking time to minimize casualties. But once it's taken there's a dilemma, they can press towards Burluk,, Chuguev or Balakleya. That can tell us a lot about how they planned for that area

Here are some of my scribbles. Two pockets of interest and color coded MSRs I would want to intercept. In short, just finishing Kupyansk alone is not enough I think. Russia would have to make some movements in other major directions to create new pockets that can be slowly "choked out".
Obviously I don't pretend to know better than MORF with this.

This insane delusion that Russia's economy will collapse in "two more weeks" in maddening.
As if Kremlin would allow it. Moscow would grit its teeth and organize lines for free bread if it was bad enough. Russians have eaten way more shit than what's on the plate with this war.
Honestly, I think some of them are even hoping that things would get worse internally in some kind of dommer messianic or masochistic complex.

Borovaya kotel is currently stopped by the small river around Kaprovka, i don't think there have been any reports about them crossing it still. The area is also close to Izyom, Liman and Slavyansk so it could be better defended. It will happen but there's no movement here.
Now the Burluk is interesting because to the North East supply line is basically cut, so supplies have to go over Stari Saltov or through Pechengi. If Russia goes towards Pechengi that means they want to clean up that entire area. But if they don't head directly there but say go for Schevchenko that means they're ok with Ukraine pouring in support and supplies in the area.
Just saying

Eh, I feel like the quadcopter pilot stage of drone warfare will be very short lived. I'd expect this to be fully automated in less than a decade. It's possible even right now, but the chips necessary are too expensive and not available in the required numbers.

>of course it wasnt a victory
>now you have to die en masse again to gain the same piece of irrelevant land
>but it sure was nice to pretend that you like advancing in opposite direction(orderly of course)
Land? You think this is about land? Imagining Russia is thirsty for land is like imagining Saudi Arabia is thirsty for sand. This isn't about land, anon. This is about the ability of Ukraine to ever pose a threat to Russia. As Russia's peace offerings have been spurned, every step the terms have grown harsher and harsher. The cities and towns are merely places where revenue and military potential can coalesce, be built up improved. To that end, Russia will both withdraw from and take land to preserve its own military potential and deny Ukraine the same. Ukraine, like a country led by a PR-obsessed novice and funded by distant warmongers that it is, doesn't withdraw to preserve its own military potential and every day its ability to deny Russia military potential drops.
this is why there are so many bold salients into Ukrainian territory. Gerasimov taunts Syrski. "Here, Sasha, here's my 3km x 7km salient into your territory. You'd like to cut it off, right? Go ahead, see if you can scrounge up more conscripts to take on my battle-hardened spearhead that's buried in you. Go on. Do it if you can"
And he can't. It's as intimate a dance as the knife fight to the death we all saw.

Agree with your view.
There is also smaller pocket with Kolodeznoe where I zoomed out too much to see roads.
It took me a while but I finally understood Russian approach. Why break teeth on hard targets?
Cut roads like cutting veins and eventually those targets will bleed out. At worst they'll be much softer to take and at best you will move in like Russia's storm of Avdiivka.
I think even here people forgot how much shaping took place over many months, but how quickly the city fell once the final order was given.
>It was a complete and total disaster for the enemy

But all that is just my noise. I already said elsewhere: I am looking forward to visiting Russian city of Kharkov this decade.

I have my doubts. Image recognition is easy, but IFF? Not so easy. I don't see Russia trusting small scale autonomous systems any time soon.
See videos of Russian stormers using FPV drones as "smart grenades". Toss into air and fly a few meters around the corner to slam into enemy dugout. Then the rest of your squad immediately pushes in.

Just glue a QR code to their helmets or something, this honestly doesn't feel like a tough problem to solve compared to everything else. With further digitalization of warfare you'd have good mapping of where your forces are anyways, so feeding that back to attac k drones shouldn't be hard.

That's the neat part, they absolutely could do that too, look at Mariupol or ZNPP operations as an example of how it went. But they're not doing it because it wouldn't align with the strategy and geopolitics.
They realized Ukraine smo turned into a proxy war where nato wants to destroy them. A brutal war where you deplete your resources plays into that. So Russia moves to an attritional mode strategically and we see how they operationally align with that, like you said why go for the hardpoints directly.
And we also have to remember some of those areas were being fortified since 2014, and that's on top of older soviet infrastructure from before.

I don't think you account how many modern armor have """le exposed""" optics because they need camera feeds and precise laser targeting for smart shells/missiles located on the hull.
This is not an argument. There are always fallback systems.

"Steroidal medication" would presumably mean anti-inflammatory corticosteroids like dexamethasone. He's definitely not doing that.

This isn't true (roiding without training gives better results than any amount of training without roiding) but he's also acting as a lumberjack now.
