It's basically a becoming of age party. You're a senior in highschool. you're about to be legally thrown into the world. you're an adult, and prom is one of the first times parents are allowing their kids to act like adults. Because since around the 2000s most of Europe is basically culturally indistinguishable from the US. Most zoomers over here talk in weird Bulgaro-English. As for prom, its a pasttime for families to take out a two thousand-ish dollar loan for their daughters to get a $900 haircut and a $1100 dress.
