Humans aren't innately monogamous. Monogamy is really a kind of peacekeeping method to keep hypergamy in check. With the decline of religion so too declined monogamy.

We decided to punish human nature because there is strength in numbers when men combine their efforts to rape, kill, and plunder. Fighting men must establish ground rules for respecting one another to prevent infighting and division, and the main thing men fought over was the claim to their own paternity. This means men had to establish a moral code for themselves that made women's desires irrelevant.

"Human nature" is for a guy to crack open your skull and then rape your wife/dauther.
That's why we have some rules to learn to live in peace and cooperate and not do shit like that.

From my experience, you need a very strong character and a good moral compass from a very young age to be monogamous. Most people are polygamous because they are essentially animals, lust controls them more than logic.
