It’s an investment. You could always pack greasy burgers in a bag at that walkable minimum wage job just 5 minutes away. Yeah, commutes suck, usually the result of the excessive cost of living near the place you’re employed. If only there were some sort of mass transit available or a system where employees share a ride rather than tens of thousands people simultaneously take to the road as individuals in individual vehicles.

The only real solution is start new cities with the infrastructure to move people from their homes to place of employment, business, schools, and entertainment. Our current cities are just layers of outward development accommodation for an ever expanding population.

In Germany you can at least get tax compensation for the commute. You get 30 to 38 cents per km.
