The issue is that society allowed addiction to become a business model and it's not just the internet. There is a Japanese myth that when you make something that you put a part of your soul into it. I don't know if it is literally true, but it is at least true in the sense that you can tell how an objects creator thinks based on how the object was created. Look at the toxic and addictive food, social media, the painkillers, psychiatric drugs, the cars and electronics designed to fail, ect. I'm just assuming such thing exists. I've tried yacy and also searx but I didn't like either. Yacy is a p2p system, it's cool but very resource heavy and at least I couldn't get any good search results even after running it for a month scraping and indexing. Searx is just a local wrapper for other search engines, it proxyes your requests to google and others.

I am becoming more convinced that Frank Herbert's "Dune" was a warning against the rise of AI.

there are subscription based 'private' search engines as well but i will never know how they work because i refuse any subscription service out of merit.
