Now that we know the world formed naturally over billions of years, and organisms evolved over time into their present forms, gods are not needed to explain anything, and they never were, or ever did.

You're wrong.
"Gods" were the survivors of previous advanced human civilizations which were nearly wiped out. The stories have been modified over the ensuing years, becoming more fanciful and outlandish as people forgot their true meaning over the generations.
