Cars are core to American culture in the sense that Americans view cars as an extension of themselves and even their physical bodies. Traversal by foot is literally impossible in this nation so this moving steel bubble is the only means of the average American to assert his freedom socially. Because Americans are fiercely independent they see every car on the road as a competitor, someone literally and figuratively trying to beat them to the punch. Zipper merging practically does not exist here because the idea of someone else "getting ahead" is unthinkable. There is no driving ettiquette just as there is no shared social contract, everyone in public is a hostile stranger keeping you from time, status, and money and if you aren't winning you are losing.

People work more and more for less and less. People are getting squeezed harder to pay for life, groceries, car note, rent, fucking health insurance if they can afford it at all, gas, clothes, kids, etc. People can't afford vacations anymore or they go somewhere a couple hundred miles away instead of a place they have never been before. This is harder on their mental health. Their spouses complain that they don't have enough money. Divorce happens, relationships break up, kids fail at school and hate you. Your old parents need to be taken care of. It all adds us and puts stress on you.

Because people see driving as linear, or a straight line. You cannot pass them as it is not your turn. Passing someone is tantamount to cutting in line which is theft. You speed up to pass ahead, they blast past you to block, you come to a dead stop to fall behind and they match you and tell you do not pass. People freak out because they feel slighted. The average NPC cannot fathom lateral thinking or 4D chess. People have also lost basic decorum and manners and have no shred of giving a little to others.
