When I lived in Salt Lake City, some homeless guy would always follow me when I took the train and we would just talk. I didn’t warm up to him ever, but I didn’t mind his presence either. This was because he was a legit schizophrenic, but the fun kind
He would randomly talk about the CIA, aliens, the war in Ukraine, etc. I would just let him go on and on and then bid him farewell when I left. One day he never showed up and I found out that he died from a violent encounter. I felt kinda bad

This is the escalation/bait and switch scam, as I like to call it.

For example, some dreg will ask for something benign and universally accepted. A coffee, a sandwich, a bottle of water, but a very specific one. Once you agree, they come with you. When you go to check out with the item, they slide another item (a beer, a scratch off, whatever) onto the order, preying on your empathy. I had one Asian bum try to pull this shit on me (a bottle of water on a hot day, dropped in a tallboy instead) and I flat out walked out without paying a dime, didnt say a word. The vagrant had the audacity to follow me out of the store and ask what my problem was. I didnt even acknowledge its existence at that point, which worked surprisingly well.
