It was too much an undertaking to have supply lines stretching through thick jungle filled with disease to grassland and desert that was already mosquito ridden. Even later colonialists had a rough time penetrating Africa despite lack if human resistance. Christianity spread fast because primitives who just discovered stone tools were easy to convert.
