His attempts to solve the depression were hare brained and socialistic (and in the case of raising taxes and trying to set production quotas in the mid 30s totally disastorous) but it was done in a way that at least made men feel like they were doing useful work for income and it didn't diminish the countries productive capacity because the country was able to massively rearm for WWII in a way nobody else could match.
