I just talk through them until they lighten up.

I've never met a zoomer that can handle himself/herself in a conversation with a mentor, they all start with that stare, so I just say "you probably don't know this, but..." and "you might not have seen this before, this is actually cool...", etc when teaching them things. Basically not giving them a chance to respond. I used to directly ask them first if they know about something, but their answer is always "yes" (meaning no, but they're scared to admit no) or "I've heard it" (meaning no).

It takes a few conversations and rallying speeches to get a zoomer to come alive, but they always do. Many of them are very passionate when someone encourages them. I don't think anyone encourages zoomers because I really shouldn't be as effective as I am with them. Some of my biggest allies at work are zoomers whom I've helped "see the light". None of them are very committed or disciplined though, so I have to keep encouraging them or else they'll be re-consumed by the miserable (lollygagging -> get yelled at -> panic and fake it -> get yelled at more -> repeat until fired) pipeline. Several of my mentees were promoted and given pay raises for just listening to me and solving a few problems on their own. With an hour or two of discipline they outshine their peers.

These examples, whether ironic or not, are usually used among gen Z as just that; Irony.
Most are self aware that the sayings and slang are retarded, but that's kinda the point.

For the customer service thing, I'm 22 in retail. I always engage and talk with people no matter their age, height, race, whatever. As long as I can crack people's shell open and have a light convo, my job's done. Plus it makes it easier to deal with them. I do have coworkers who do the bland stare and don't bother talking much, which does annoy me when I see it. But, using a guy from yesterday as an example, their often still at school, have a shit ton of homework, math exams, and more. They legit do not have the energy to pretend to be happy while "serving" some wrinkly boomer.

In my experience though as well, boomers and gen X are the most frustrating to deal with. It baffles me that in the year 2025 there are still old people that look like scared animals caught at a crossroads when having to decide whether to use a (very scary) self-serve machine or wait 3rd in line at a fucking checkout for a handful of four items. it takes less than three minutes to use a machine if you have basic tech literacy and working eyeballs.

Ironically the kids and teens, while often very shy, are infinitely more polite and pleasant to deal with than a jaded and grumpy gen X on his way back from work. That and they bring up much less depressing or yikes-y conversation topics.


But at the end of the day, it all depends on the person, not their generation. Some boomers are really chill and nice to chat with, others are gross and obviously don't shower, millennials are usually nice and are compatible with me reliability-wise, gen X are very mellow and mixed, while gen Z's are just shy or awkward, but often polite.

I don't really know how to end this but these are my thoughts.

Another example, my cousins are gen A so it's even worse. My male cousin is like 13 and has never said a complete sentence to me. I asked him if he wanted to race our bikes and he just stared at me and slowly rode away. There's nothing clinically wrong with him, he just refuses to socialize.
