Arguably, it only became a problem after open boarders and demographics changed. I'm including the focus shift from advertising to bread winning males to women. there's also the argument that a lot of political money has been used to advertise to wider demographics in bids to essentially buy votes. If there wasn't enough, they'd just approve entry visas. A lot of Indians were actually pro Trump, pointing to more than 1 reason why the h1b issue was such a controversy. It's not like China is scrambling to approve more h1b Indians from what anyone else knows. Moving away from politics, commercial brands have always been very flexible in who they target and generally try to pivot to the most under-served demographic to avoid markets that are saturated with competition.
