In my opinion a garden is meant to invite nature into your home in a setting that is also comfortable for you.

Also acceptable is to use it to display your collection of rare and exotic plants.

You could also devise a garden for pure aesthetics, arranging hedges and planters in a way that accentuates the architecture of your house.

Orโ€ฆyou could go full boomer route and waste the space on a flat ugly dead zone with no shade or privacy where nothing wants to live.

A lawn is fine so long as you have it edged with flowers. The flowers are what attract the insects, which then attract birds and so on.

be a good goy and don't visit an actual park or a botanical garden, instead get a piece of polluted soil in your copy and paste suburban paper house that will be a breeding place for termites and gopher infestations if you don't spend thousands of dollars to maintain it

I feel irrational hatred towards people that fix their garders with extreme care. Shit sucks. You are not some kind of roman dominus that subjogates nature and brings civilization, you are a Monsanto goon that sprays your GMO lifeless lawn with organophosphorus compounds and are scared of bugs

All sorts of retarded laws made it not legal or not worth the effort into having a yard that is anything but just short grass.
You can be arrested if your grass is slightly too long or the shade of green is off. That's why it's so common for people to just astroturf fake grass so they don't have to think about it anymore and not deal with cops and get fined.

This seems to only be an American problem. In the rest of the world houses either don't have yards and it's all pavement or the houses are in the middle of nowhere and no one gives a shit what your yard looks like.

I mean that using the same principles by which the HOAs mandate that for example your grass stays cut short you defeat your own argument as to why you should be able to determine the state of others' yards, and that since you own nothing and are in a losing position, your circumstances won't change.

Its weird how it was just Boomers and somewhat Gen X that cares about having perfect grass lawns where as the generations before them loved having gardens and different stuff than just grass. WHy were boomers so obsessed with grass? I would say milennials and zooms also have gardens but they can't get houses.

Having some grassy field in your property is nice. You can walk and rest over all, play ball and shit. Still, it depends on needs and size. That flat green makes no sense.
Some trees there, busher over there, perhaps a small crops garden with some grass for one to play around is ideal.

Just finished making a yard house for my son by using wood from old furniture only. (0 euro budget). You can see my olive trees in the background. I let the weeds grow in that part, it's healthier for the yard.
I learned a long time ago on /pol/ that if there are parts of your yard that you dont visit daily, let the weeds grow, it attracts pollinators and it's better for the overall area and nearby decorative bushes and flowers

I think it has to do with the fact that some people have to force their will upon the land.

i ripped out my lawn out and planted native Eremophila and let all the salt bush and blue bush grow back. planted some eucalypts as well. when i had the lawns I used to have problems with crickets chirping all fucking night long in the ceiling, everywhere. i hate crickets. but when I got rid of the lawn all kinds of insects came back and then came the huntsman spiders to eat them. they absolutely fucking decimated the cricket population. raped and pillaged. first year I had to remove about 5 of the cunts from inside my house. preceding years the insects populations stabilised and so did the huntsmans. was interesting to watch.
