2025 (as of July): May and June revisions were exceptionally large and negative, with May dropping from an initial gain of 144,000 to just 19,000, and June from 147,000 to only 14,000, resulting in a combined downward revision of 258,000 jobs. July’s initial jobs number was also weak at 73,000, the lowest in almost five years. Large negative revisions have been a consistent theme in 2025.
2024: The BLS revised March 2023–March 2024 job numbers down by 818,000 during annual benchmarking—the largest downward revision since the pandemic. Many months saw job gains revised lower, especially entering the 2024 election period.
2023–2021: Monthly revisions were generally less dramatic, averaging about 30,000–50,000 jobs up or down for most months. In crisis periods, such as during or immediately after the pandemic, revisions could swing more sharply.
