Rochester, N.Y. — On July 31, 2025, at approximately 5:23 p.m., a call was made to 911 reporting a suspicious person near 33 Ernestine Street who had walked onto the deck of a house and was wandering door to door. He was described as wearing red clothing. At 7:17 pm, another call was received reporting that a male was back near Ernestine Street, acting suspiciously. At 7:26 pm, a call came in on nearby Milton Street reporting that the male in red clothing had tried to get into an occupied car that was parked in a driveway. At 7:32 pm, another call was received indicating the male was sitting on the hood of a car. Officers arrived on scene at 7:36 pm and located the male, later identified as 38-year-old Akintunde Campbell, in the area of 33 Ernestine Street and attempted to stop him.

Initially, one Officer went hands-on and physically took hold of Campbell, in an attempt to stop him from walking away. After Campbell knocked the Officer to the ground, he disengaged, and began to walk away from them as they attempted to create dialogue. After a few seconds, Campbell turned around, facing the officers, and reached into his hoodie pocket, pulling out a handgun. Both Officers gave multiple commands for him to drop the handgun, but he did not. The two Officers involved both fired their department-issued handguns, striking Campbell multiple times. Responding Officers began rendering medical care until EMS arrived and determined that he was deceased. Campbell’s handgun, a Palmetto State Armory 9mm handgun, loaded with 13 rounds, was recovered from the scene.
