You can go to Las Vegas, rent a car, stay in some place outside gaming corridors (Skyline, Railroad Pass, etc.) and spend your time and very little money checking out all kinds of things - Lake Mead, Nelson, take a drive to Laughlin, head up to Zion in Utah, Pahrump and Death Valley, Mt. I go to Las Vegas because it's a relatively inexpensive getaway for me. It's a good jumping off point. But the gaming areas aren't even worth checking out - the vibe is terrible, the people are even worse and prices are absurd; if you're drunk and stupid, or have a fuckton of money to burn, it's probably okay, but the more you pay attention, the more you realize it's not a place you want to be. Spend a quiet evening in your room and rest up for the next day.

I play Texas hold em all the time, but rarely in a casino. I live about 4-5 hours away from Vegas and only an hour and a half from Wendover. Why would I drive all the way there when there are underground card rooms and clubs in the city that I live, and it only takes me 15-30 mins to drive to one. Not to mention the gambling addicts/fish are drawn to these locales due to a lack of funds so they’re easy prey.

I’ve played plenty of cards at a casino:

I was there two weeks ago. It was on the weekend, so the Strip and casinos were pretty packed and I was rather surprised to see all the "Vegas is dying" articles when I came back. Considering the pricing of everything, though, it makes sense on a macro level. I spent around $2k between flights, hotel, and entertainment for a weekend trip. I could afford it, but as a millennial who was paying for my first adult vacation that wasn't a family trip, I was definitely feeling uncomfortable with the amount I was having to spend.

Worst part overall was the feeling that every. single. thing. you did, you were getting absolutely kiked on the price. Can't bring toothpaste on the plane and there was none in the hotel room: $7 in the hotel shop. Had to walk a mile in the blazing heat to go to CVS. Gamble for a bit to kill some time. Penny machines are non-existent and even the cheapest video poker machines seem to eat up your money faster than they should. Oh but hasn't Vegas pivoted away from just gambling to other entertainment options? $80 to see an hour-long movie at the Sphere. All the cool museums up and down the Strip that would be fun for kids are $60-80 dollars per person. Decided to buy a joint and just walk around. THE LEGAL DISPENSARY SOLD ME FAKE FUCKING HEMP WEED FOR $30 A JOINT. Alright, I'll just get some drinks and take them back to my hotel. But there's no fridge in the room. They made sure all the buckets and trash cans lying around are too small to fill with ice and hold more than 3 or 4 drinks. My friends and I resorted to balancing cans on the AC to keep them cool.

I enjoyed my trip and don't regret going, but there was this underlying inability to relax because you had this sense that the smallest bit of enjoyment you'd have would rack up an outrageous bill. It wasn't even about the money so much as the feeling that even if you wanted a bottle of water, you had to be OK with getting fucked in the ass financially because you are a dumb goy.
