Benedict Arnold was a hero. They pushed him to the other side to reduce GW's ability to form a loyal military faction when the war was over.
Then they framed it all in the storytelling for him to be a vile turncoat.
GW couldn't defend him, even though he knew what they were doing, because Arnold was a political liability.
I think if GW knew better he should have cleared his brothers name, but that would have made him enemies with the faction that pushed Arnold out.
