If Trump doesn't release it, wouldn't that increase the probability of the assassination attempt being fake? He gets shot at multiple times and still keeps campaigning, and people thought they were electing someone who actually believed in something. So if he's in the files what would it matter to him if he faced justice? He was already putting his life on the line, I'd still want criminal charges on him even if that means Vance takes over or whoever, but at the very least it shows his administration has some integrity and he cared enough about his promises to go through with them at his own expense.
