As someone who has subdued an attempted active shooter on a base, these things are over fast most of the time.
By fast I mean seconds, not minutes.
We had a supply sergeant go nuts and start yelling at people, screaming his head off while weapons cleaning was going on.
He stomped over to the open arms room after yelling at two soldiers to fuck off and walked into the armsroom and it was quiet for about thirty seconds.
Then the armorer started shouting for help and a bunch of us piled in to find the supply sgt and the armorer wrestling over an M4 and the loaded self defense magazine kept in the armsroom.
It was an instant dogpile.
Later, the first sergeant made a joke to me about "Bet you didn't have this on your Bingo card for what you'd be doing today" and I replied that it was not my first time fighting a soldier about to go postal with a weapon. I accidentally stepped into a situation while deployed with an MP trying to eat his service weapon in the portajohn. He had the barrel under his chin and for some reason didn't lock the portajohn and he stared at me in shock when I opened the door to take a piss and somehow my body just reacted and snatched the weapon away by the barrel and threw it before I could even think. It was off safe, but the hammer wasn't back.
