It's like you can never fully, honestly, naturally relax, or really feel like you have a guard-down peaceful moment with your mind wholly at ease
it might be because the core of life in the USA is making money
whereas that is not the core of life in the UK, France, or Canada
In those places there's a basic civility that everyone has been striving for, society has been working toward for centuries.
whereas in the US it feels as if what everyone has been working toward is getting as much money for yourself as possible
even most of the "civilized" elements of life in the USA are financially-incentivized:
compare...
>USAyou keep your grass cut because you don't want the HOA to fine you, you pay your bills because you don't want to affect your credit score, you do well in school so you can get a job that pays as much as possible
>UK CANADA FRANCEyou keep your grass cut because it looks tidy and contributes to neighbourhood harmony
you pay your bills because you received a good or service for an agreed-upon price and settling accounts forthwith maintains the balance of the system
you do well in school so you'll have a richer life by learning about yourself, your history, your country, the world, and so get a job that supports you and your future family and contributes to society
Ever see the Simpson's episode in which Homer hoards sugar in their backyard and feels compelled to guard it 24/7 because he thinks someone might take it?
that's kind of what living in the US felt like lol
I also lived on the US East Coast previous to Dallas, fwiw. I have no ill will toward Americans - aside from having a lot of American friends, I'm part American myself, if that matters
anyway, just my impression
