The Quran wasn't even written down or compiled into one document until after Muhammed died, it only existed in the minds of the Hafiz who memorized parts and repeated them orally to others.
Then after the battle of Yamama, most of the hafiz were killed, and large parts of the Quran were lost forever with them. After that, Abu Bakr brought together the remaining hafiz and whatever scraps of written teachings could be found and compiled them into the first written Quran.
Then there were still various other versions floating around until Uthaman declared one edition to be the "official" version and ordered the destruction of the rest.
