Japan wasn't 'colonized' because they were cooperative. I've never seen anything like this, they hated Buddhists so much that they WILLINGLY destroyed temples and attacked state officials, they took on insane amounts of debt to attack China and Korea, they willingly built the biggest Catholic cathedral in Asia. Japan is absolutely bizarre, I don't know what the Dutch did to their education in Edo, but it worked in getting everyone to hate the shogunate.
