I think the first one was necessary, because Japan's rigid honour code meant they'd drag their whole country down rather than surrender, BUT if the enemy has some new ultra mega super weapon, well we have to surrender to save our babies from these monsters.

The second one wasn't necessary. I think they did it from a combination of vengeance, Japan dragging its feet on actually surrendering (three days is not a long time btw) and, well, they had another bomb just sitting there.

Japan gave us a few hours notice before attacking Pearl Habor. We could have given them the same notice before nuking them again. If Japan thought that 3 days wasn't much time we could have dropped a 3rd and 4th nuke. Take your time.

Waitwaitwait, are you seriously claiming against all historical evidence that Japan actually surrendered before the second nuke was dropped, and the US just nuked them again anyway as a sort of radioactive exclamation mark? That's pretty awesome, actually.

No they didn't, they did arrange to deliver a declaration of war to the White House, but due to Japanese incompetence it didn't actually get delivered until after the attack was underway. The US did have several days of warning that something was up due to partially breaking one of the Japanese naval codes, but that doesn't exactly constitute Japan warning us.

Same reason the Poles were cracking the Enigma long before the Germs invaded. Shit's fun.

Holy shit. This is like the one person I've ever seen on this godforsaken website that gets it. Japan was bankrupt since 1871 all of the zaibatsu were controlled by foreign financiers (particularly J.P. Morgan) and Japan had like 200% external debt due to the Russo-Japanese war which was financed by none other than Jacob Schiff, who also was an architect of the fed reserve and a key financier of the Bolsheviks. Hirohito was a Field Marshal for the British army until 1928 and also a Knight of Garter, Japan is functionally anglo.
