Luck plays an enormous factor on life success. There are billions of people that once that they were born in the wrong place, they had no hope of ever making it out of their lot in life.

Exceedingly few people have gone from absolute destitution to total success, and those types of people are almost never found out. Their histories and past relations will catch up to consume them.

I think of how fortunate I am. There are no fewer than several thousand key decisions before and after my birth that allows me to leisurely type out this post instead of working 100 hours per week just to pay rent and stay barely fed. There are millions of decisions that have placed me where I am today. I'd say it's a slow climb towards a net benefit, since I am no longer poor, but well-off enough to finally live alone for once.
