It's an admixture of things which made that historical identity and are no longer present. That said, it was never really an attachment to a mother country or hostility to the new one, but a space in-between, at least for Germans. New dialects emerged, some of which still exist (Wiskonsindeutsch, Teksasdeutch, Pennsilfanisch), new traditions, etc., etc., but everything was mostly subsumed into a general American whiteness (pre-INRA, onbviously). With Germans it was kind of by force. Some families had two or three generations who never learned English.

In my yrs of working on my family tree, I’ve discovered that about 2/3rds of my lineage is English, about 1/4th is German, w the rest being scattered through places such as Scotland, Ireland, Norway etc. I’ve been learning German for about a decade and keep up with news from the UK and Germany, because it’s important to me. We are Euromutts, but we still should be able to associate with and return to the countries our ancestors left.
