Was Assad a dictator? Perhaps, but he was all that stood in the way of the atrocities and reprisals against minority groups which we are now witnessing in Syria. Anyone that wasn't an NPC could see this would happen years ago, but NPCs are only now finding out the implications of what they were supporting with their "current thing" bullshit. Some of the blood is on their hands because they helped to bring this about, by voting for it or at least cheering it along.

The reality is that you need a national average IQ of 100 to have any hope at a functional democratic state. Not because people with IQs of 100 understand the reality of how the world really works, but because then you will have enough people of 120+ IQ to actually make it work.
With places like Syria where the average functional IQ is closer to 80, there just aren't enough people with 120+ IQs to make a democracy. The best you can hope for is a beneficial dictatorship.
