Ramanujeet found a two-volume encyclopedic tome that contained six thousand theorems on all fields of mathematics. He then figured out he could derive results that connected these fields that weren't in the books. If you go back far enough like at the time of Newton, there were sometimes conclusions presented via letters where proofs weren't shared. But it was a "gentleman's agreement" where one mathematician took the word of the other that they had in fact proven it. That's different from "it came to me in a dream sir".

You can clearly see it's an approximation of pi. They show the error. It's not hard to find such approximations by trial and error. You can start with a fraction like 22/7 which is close enough and work from there. It's not actually adding anything to our knowledge. Especially when there are simpler formulae that are easier to remember and calculate.

If you want to actually learn some cool things with pi go and watch some of Donald Knuth's lectures. There he finds interesting correlations between pi and trees (data structures).
