The higher incidence of schizophrenia in Ashkenazi jews is independent of religious upbringing. Though centuries of behavior influence epidemics and genetics. Behavior and genes are a feedback loop.

Most diseases as classified are just observations of symptoms, and can either only guess at the cause or have so many potential causes that it is circular and just comes back to being a description of symptoms. So if you take schizophrenia or any form of psychosis, it is irrelevant to ask if it is "real" because the effects are obviously real. They can have many different causes, some physical and chemical, some emotional, some spiritual. All are a result of sin, whether direct to the individual or inherited from the Fall. There are certainly people who live so sinfully that they go mad definitely as a result of their sin.
