The scale is beyond western comprehension. In this picture alone there are 1 million solar panels. There are more than a million such locations in China.

Solar panels only last about 25 years and are so expensive to recycle that most processing plants refuse to do it. In a quarter century, when all those millions of panels that haven't been destroyed by nature (and most of them will have been) become useless, they'll basically all just go into a landfill and be replaced with a million more unrecyclable panels that will have consumed more power in their construction and maintenance than they produced in their lifespan.

>The scale is beyond western comprehension.
It's not, but here's the problem: Some assholes come along and steal as many electrical components their van and/or pick up truck can hold and abscond with it. Then who pays for that shit? The West is not a high trust or high control society and therefore can not sustain such an endeavor. Security corporations would get sued into the ground for trying to protect this shit from thieves. I don't know if China is high trust, but it is certainly high control. Therefore it may work.

They can, but for some reason China scaled back its plans to build a shitload of nuclear reactors. Don't know exactly why. Maybe they thought "wait, we're going to have to find a place to store all the spent material from all these reactors? Fuck that, we already catch flak for the cancer villages."
>>512818423
>Chernobyl
Result of overconfident incompetence of its management, and government censorship of a flaw in the reactor's design. Both possible conditions a Chinese reactor could be exposed to so that's marginally fair.

Maintenance and updating equipment is always an issue when expanding the scale.
Almost all machine parts are consumables, and in such environments, strong sunlight and sand cause damage, and fine sand enters the interior of components, causing rapid deterioration.
And when new technologies are applied and new equipment is invented, the old equipment quickly becomes obsolete. If there is always a generous budget, there would be no problem with updating, but that is not always the case.
Eventually, they will be abandoned and left in the desert, creating a mountain of industrial waste.

Depending on how you define it, it may be true that solar, wind, and hydroelectric power are more "eco-friendly"and "sustainable" than thermal power generation using oil and coal, but the essence of extracting and converting natural energy sources such as light, heat, and water into electricity, a form that is more universally usable by humans, remains unchanged.
Most of it is generated by turning turbines, and solar panels simply use solar cells.
As technology advances, the difference in apparent conversion efficiency have narrowed, but the latter generally require significantly larger area for the same output, and relying solely on that requires batteries to compensate for the instability of its output, which further reduce efficiency, making it not a one-size-fits-all solution but rather case-by-case.
Of course, it goes without saying that the materials required to manufacture these machines and batteries are also natural resources that must be mined.
Everyone expects magic from science and engineering, and many people have become brainwashed by the buzzword of "unlimited natural energy." However, it uses machinery, machinery inevitably wears out, machinery is finite and do not take it at face value.

The sand under those panels will be grass within 6 years, they can speed it along by installing a machine that uses electricity to condense water out of air and spill it on the ground under the panel.

Trees will have to be trimmed there within a decade. Anyone can do the work of doing a walk through every week and dust off the panels with a portable air-blower.

Just admit it, China is making the USA look like a 3rd world country, which it is.
