it wasn’t even discovered until 1915 and not mapped until the 1930’s. Is not small … 37,000 km2 .. roughly the size of Belgium. Basically a mystery.

Sure that’s what Soviets / Kremlin always says. What’s been more “strange” is that Google Earth / Maps resolution is basically nil. You can easily make out geographical features in say Greenland or the Canadian arctic (including military bases like Thule or Alert), but they and go close and it goes black. There’s no logical reason for this since high resolution says have been mapping the arctic for decades.

There are no cool fax. There’s barely any public fact.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Severnaya_Zemlya

Again, “strange,” multiple exploration sailings have traveled through the region over the centuries. Most other Siberian islands and archipelagos were found in the mid 1800s. Ships sailed right past this massive land mass as late as 1905 and didn’t report anything.

I had a dream that there were large islands in the Arctic sea that were being kept secret. 4ish big ones in an "X" pattern, and a bunch of smaller ones. In the dream there were buoys in the waters, and a few boats, and the islands had empty prefab houses. It was strange. I dont remember it being particularly cold, or at least there wasnt any snow that I saw.

Exactly. Svalbard, just to the west was somewhat settled in the 1700s by Nordic peoples (like Greenland) and then used by whalers after. The Canadian Arctic was pretty much fully mapped (Northwest passage hopes) by 1900. Peary planted a flag on the North Pole in 1909.

It’s just bizarre this huge amount of the earth basically was completely unknown for another 30-40 years AND NOW is still an utter mystery.

Does this make sense? The Antarctic is completely on the map and researched. Why this black hole?

I saw convincing evidence of the continued existence of wooly mammoths AND mastodons there to this day, on the History Channel. But why not? The place is absolutely impassable, the only people to have seen it from the air up close are in the military... anything could be up there.

I also remember on the old Keyhole forum there was a 300+ page thread about how there's a gold meteor up there too and it's censored on all the imagery world wide and Russia effectly has enough precious metals to make 'em cheaper than steel.

NYET comrade, is no gold meteor.
Perhaps you are thinking of the Inuit meteor where they used that and iron working from the Norse to get a tech lead on all the other tribes.
>Have meteor in middle of nowhere Nunavut.
>Chip it off and make tools and spread these tools throughout a vast area.

> past a certain point, everything up north becomes rocks.

Well that’s just bullshit. I’ve worked in Canadian mines and I can tell you, as a certain fact, that pretty much all of the Canadian arctic has been surveyed by all sorts of satellite imagery and data to sus out geological potential, and every summer for the past 75 years, dozens if not hundreds of geotechnical teams have been dropped in the middle of nowhere to sample and possibly stake out economic claims.

You see rocks. 20 years ago those rocks turned out to $30b of diamonds in NWT. Or rare earth. Etc

Gotta say it is bizarre Google has high resolution of the Canadian arctic while this place doesn’t. There are geotechnicals that look at these images for techtonic or mountain or creek clues that might suggest a mineral / extraction potential.

its because most of the time its encased in ice, so people didn't sail past it--they couldn't even reach it because the sea all around it was frozen. and people almost never took that route along the northern coast of russia for that reason--it was impassable because of ice. the few times people did pass through there (during the month or two when you might make it through without being blocked by ice), my guess is it was shrouded by fog.

I think it has more to do with commercial imaging sats primarily using sun-synchronous orbits. They don't pass directly over the areas nearest to the poles.
