Pilate objected but the jews basically threatened him by saying he was no friend of Caesar if he didn't do it. The region was subject to revolt and the Sanhedrin claimed to be more loyal to the emperor than a Roman governor and one of the things the Sanhedrin charged Jesus with was leading a revolt against Roman rule. He tried to have him freed but they basically more or less made it clear they wouldn't accept that. If word got back to Rome there was trouble and some guy was leading an insurrection and Pilate was doing thing there would be serious consequences for him, as the Romans wanted to rule without issue. A few decades later the jews revolted again and this time it led to absolute destruction of Judea.

The word "Christian" wasn't invented until the middle of the 2nd century, so obviously Tacitus can't be describing Christians
