Japan is an overrated country with an overrated culture. If it wasn't for anime, videogames and technology, they'd be irrelevant and basically like Finland: introverted, nature-loving Asians with a weird language.

You are probably young. According to international surveys, Japan’s reputation in the world actually peaked around 2000 when anime was far less popular than now.
Weeb culture actually made its reputation worse and maybe 4chan is part of the reason.
