Affordability and actual wealth for the average person peaked in the 1970s at a level far higher than had ever come before. You had modern technology and comforts, could afford a home on a regular single income, had tons of disposable cash, etc.
It's been a slow downhill ever since

The 70s were pretty dog shit for work and crime in Britain and New York. Good ol days for Rhodesia though. And Dallas I think. 50s and 90s were probably better across the board.
