Well, alchol fucks you up in ways that are really hard to achieve with Amphetamines. For example, even if you're dumb enough to get yourself addicted, your body will wean off it and return to baseline within a few weeks of quitting. Whereas long term aclhol addiction will actually permanently reconfigure your inner organs to the point where you are at risk of organ failure if you quit cold turkey since its toxicity affects your entire system.
Alc flies under the radar because its the one drug that society has agreed on to accept, but seen rationally its one of the hardest drugs available.

The problem I had with meth is that I would stay up for weeks on end and literally turn into a schizophrenic. I ended up in psychiatric facilities multiple times because of this... I think the drug itself turns you into a self-serving, manipulative, obsessive goon but my lack of sleep was most likely the cause of me losing my fucking mind.

Ye, because its METHamphetamines aka the hyper version. With normal apmhetamines you can go to sleep ~12 hours after your last dose at latest, and they will also eventually just stop working as your (nor)adrenaline stores are depleted and your body decides its time to sleep anyways.
Meth is a dumb fuckign idea because it so uncontrollable, and because the lack of sleep and rest will eventially turn you crazy, as you experienced.

This is correct. Meth just makes you extremely awake, all the rest comes from not sleeping for far too long of a stretch. You don't really notice because you are high, but you are accruing an amount of sleep deprivation that has turned people legut insane in experiments.
