Why did Syrians suddenly decide to blow their own country to bits in 2011, and then to keep blowing it to bits until it became a weak shell of itself and a vassal of Turkey and Israel? Syria in 2010 had its problems, but it was significantly stronger and more unified than it is in 2025. It has things like an air defense system, which Syrians chose to destroy for some reason.

They've been stoking unrest in Syria for ages. Like in all Islamic countries there already were strong tribal feuds, which were kept under control by an authoritarian (secular) state. So they just had to agitate tribal unrest and Islamic fundamentalist resistance against the state.

It was ultimately inevitable and Assad just gave up on trying to salvage the shitshow. Also all of their oil was in areas controlled by the US and Kurds and they were under heavy sanctions so they were completely bankrupt and unable to pay their troops.
