most slavic languages seem to follow that format too. I think the romans were the first to devise the whole naming weekdays after gods thing, so it only spread to the more romanized cultures like the celts and germanics and hispanics. doesnt seem present in slavic or greek languages. do you know if the greeks ever named wednesday after hermes or something like that greek anon? czechs use the numbering system for weeks as well, and in german wednesday is known as midweek

interesting. Im just curious whether this was originally a latin or greek invention, or from somewhere else. I know the 7 day week system is a babylonian or sumerian invention according to historians but im not sure who started naming the days after gods originally

I don't even think Wednesday is named after him
Possibly the other way round or just a coincidence.

He did, just the babylonians were the first to notice it
>They observed roughly 7-day intervals between the moon's phases (new moon, first quarter, full moon, last quarter).
the year is based on the cycles of the sun, while the week and month are both based on cycles of the moon.

pure coincidence huh....
the one that puzzles me is mercurys name. are markets, merchants and mercenaries named after mercury, or is he named after them? does market mean 'space of mercury', or does mercury just mean 'lord of markets'? latinfags never give me the straight answer on this one
