I visited the DDR for a week when I was 18. It was the better Deutschland, by far. For the first time in my life I remember thinking that these Germans weren't so bad, and actually quite nice people. And I never thought that once in the BRD, either before or after. I visited the Karl Marx book store in East Berlin and bought a book about Lenin, trying to figure out what magic he had done to turn Germans into nice people.

It was, but it also heavily relied on a pre-planned trade network that stopped working as soon as other opted out of the Soviet system. Besides that, it was systematically plundered by the Soviets who moved whole factories out of the country and the 60s cultural revolution hit us just as hard (but not as sexual, as the DDR was already more relaxed and nudist) as West Germany.
