It's much more than just pushing the overpopulation and GW narrative. If only half the people, it would in a way double everyone's value. So they start with this 'estimated low' claiming Europeans are so diseased the natives probably all died just coming into contact with us. This makes it look like a parabolic curve of population growth. Ignoring this and taking the estimated pop before to now shows a far more gradual rise in population over time.

Before colonialism ended it was estimated to have a lower population than Europe. Most countries especially third world countries lie about there demographics. There are many groups who would benefit from multible regions of the geo/polical spectrun IE the leadership of the countries themselves lying about demographic breakdowns(how much larger is the Turkish population than the Kurdish population, does Botswana have that many more tswana than bushman), foreign aid benefits, military capacity, attracting investors, racist and anti immigration groups(does Africa and the Middle east have the population to overrun Europe.
