I have read the 95 thesis, it doesn't change a thing. Any one of us can say any certain aspect of the church is wrong but we don't have the authority to change it, nor should we, because our own personal interpretations are generally uninformed and letting any random guy reorganize the faith as a whole is how a thousand protestant denominations were created who now can't even agree on basic doctrine. Keeping with the Catholic church despite any small criticism challenges us to be more merciful and thus better Christians. It has also allowed the Catholic church to avoid becoming embroiled and changed by the social issues that arise through time that have nothing to do with us or our doctrine; ie we don't have women priests, but now every mainline protestant branch does, we don't affirm gay marriage but most mainline protestants do. They are changing themselves based on the world's propaganda, we do not.

He is the successor of Peter, its as simple as that. He is not God. Do you have a specific problem with the term "Vicar of Christ" or something? Vicar means deputy basically. Peter was the leader of the apostles, able to settle disputes basically, his authority was passed down in what we call apostolic succession. It's a simple thing. We do not honor the Pope as if he is God in the flesh at all, but we do honor him as if he were the head of the church (in the same regard as Peter was). Of any of the possible critiques, having the Pope is really the easiest to understand and least controversial, but history has framed the narrative about him with lies. Protestants get all flustered at the mention of the Pope but have no qualms about the King being the head of the Church of England for example.
