Ex-telemarketer here ( Yes, it was a shameful time in my history but I needed to pay bills or get kicked out of my rental )

The best thing you can to a telemarketer is just hang up immediately. That means they can move onto the next call. Most of the time telemarketers are paid on commissions.
The worse you can do is keep the telemarker on the line when you have no intention of doing anything ( buying a product or providing information ). I remember the worse were little old ladies who just wanted to have a chat. It was very sad actually and I felt like a jerk trying to offload some shit product onto them.

I would say much the same holds true for scammers. So if you want to fuck with them then ask them to hold the line for a few minutes, put the phone down and just walk away. Any shit will do

Tell your friends and family that you never answer your phone directly but if you hear their voice on the answering machine you will pick up.
We were getting spammed daily multiple times and this worked well for us. Only get a couple a year now.

I get 7-10 voicemails a day from the scam centers leaving the exact same voicemail that has a different crackle or random number sound blip played before each repeated bite. It's insane how much work they're putting in to getting nothing from me. Android phones also have call screening that does the same thing. Problem is, the scamjeet usually just hangs up and and flags the number as viable in the autodialer, hoping that you might pick up for real next time. Same thing if you just let it go to voicemail. The scamjeet is basically casting a dragnet on anything with a pulse because even a few US dollars is worth a fortune in jeetland.

Best thing to do is to pick up within 2 rings and hit mute. The autodialer interprets this as a dead line and strikes your number from the list. Does cut down on the number of calls but you might start getting them again since these scam call centers refresh number lists every few months.

iPhone has a setting that automatically silences all calls from numbers not in your contact list. Nobody outside of your contact list should be able to contact you in almost all circumstances.

I changed my energy supplier. I’m super duper careful with data for… good reasons. But i changed energy supplier to UTILITA and the same day the scam calls and texts started, about 12 hours after UTILITA sold my data to scammers.
