What do you call two people in courtship? What do you call a boy and girl who like each other and spend time together? "Friends?" Your ancestors would laugh in your face for comparing male friendship to a woman's company. Betrothal only makes sense in the context of an alliance marriage. Most marriages are alliances second, not first. It's entirely reasonable to have a phase in which the prospective couple are getting to know each other but not committed. It's entirely reasonable for this to be a courtship and for them to be called boyfriend and girlfriend.
