Languages - obviously it's better to socialise and use the language in the real world with all the contextual cues that come with that.
I can't explain English grammar to you, but does that actually matter when all I need the language for is to communicate?
But for most academic subjects, actually reading a good textbook is indispensible.
If we're talking fiction, then yes, it doesn't magically get good just because it's published on paper.
