Think about how you would behave if you wanted to solve a life or death problem, and had lots of funding. You'd be actively trying multiple new things and gathering as much data as possible. You wouldn't be actively smothering and blacklisting the people claiming success from following new leads. You wouldn't be passively saying "the data on that just isn't in yet" and then 25 years later still making exactly the same excuse.
