California has a massive rat problem currently as well due to all the abandoned almond tree farms as well.

it's common in the mountain west. There's usually a few, up to a dozen cases among campers around lake tahoe and yosemite every year.

it is common with prarie dogs in parts of wyoming and colorado too, and theres a few human cases there every year.

Nothing to be alarmed about. Homeless angelinos and their rats don't go to tahoe
