He wasn't all that bad.
He had to pronounce himself emperor because he had no choice.
Before he was president he was the one who protected China's interests in Korea, Mongolia, and Xinjiang.
After he became president he did an OK job, but because people didn't know how to operate he had to pronounce himself emperor to give people guidance.
Fun fact, there was a guy who tried to usurp the country and proclaim the return of the Qing in Beijing, and everybody celebrated by waving Qing flags.

The republic would have been fine had he not declared himself emperor, leading to mass revolts and turning china into a free for all. He could have consolidated power slowly instead of doing what he did.

The revolts were from the elites. But yes, he did set a bad precedent because he wanted to keep power.

Well there isn't one book I can read about ROC history, but I do recommend you read Chiang Kai Shek's and Chiang Ching Kuo's diaries.
