I’m a senior developer at META and I contributed to the development of the recommendation algorithms for Instagram and Facebook.
I’m sure many of you have noticed that lately Instagram is overflowing with antisemitic reels, often being pushed even when they don’t align with a user’s past interests. The same trend is slowly showing up on other platforms.
Having worked closely with multiple teams on Instagram’s algorithm, I know exactly how aggressive and even unethical it is: it’s built so that the utility function of the neural network optimizes for the amount of time a user spends on the platform. In short, it’s engineered to capture attention and foster addiction. These qualities also make it an effective cognitive weapon, and that’s precisely what more and more reliable insiders I know have concluded. The exponential rise of antisemitic content without any censorship is not accidental: I can assure you we already have the means to automatically remove at least 98% of it.
It acts as a catalyst, and it works extremely well. I’ve personally seen at least two friends recently go from knowing nothing about Jewish people to performing Nazi salutes. At first, it started as a joke, but now they’re deadly serious.
What we believe (with good reasons and evidence) is that there’s a deliberate attempt, disguised as coincidence and freedom of speech, to provoke public reactions: violence, terror, discrimination, and so on. The end goal seems to be tightening restrictions on free speech even further (just look at what Trump is already doing in America and what several European governments are pursuing).
In essence, it is deliberate, a pressure valve designed to push people into certain behaviors, providing the perfect excuse to introduce unprecedented measures.
A friend advised me to post this here. It’s my first time doing so and it will also be the last. This post won’t get any follow-ups, I’ve already exposed myself more than enough.
