Blame western aid and modern technology. It's the same reason why the population of Africa exploded and why so many people live longer now. They make it to adulthood by sheer numbers. Look into the infant mortality rate in India, it's probably still high compared to the world's average, but they have a lot of kids. For every jeet that dies in some tragic or retarded way, probably 5 more are born.

Another reason why south and southeast asia has a massive population compared to the rest of the world is actually rice. Unlike other grains, rice can be harvested like 3 times a year and has more calories than wheat, so this makes it able to feed a larger population.
