Bipolar isn't your brain missing pieces, your GABA and serotonin receptors are off and it leads to the brain over firing or under firing it's sodium ion pumps. Lithium helps regulate that.
I'm bipolar type 2 and have it in between minor and moderate in terms of severity. I take lithium aspartate 5mg - 10mg, alongside magnesium and ashwaganda to help my central nervous system regulate itself. Potassium is also very important but you can't get a big potassium supplement. You can only get potassium from food so eat healthy. I was able to solve my BP2 with supplements and a clean diet. Alcohol is terrible for us, don't drink it. I always make this mistake and go hypomanic in front of friends and family :^(
